Louis Virgil Lathrop

Listen to Obituary

Louis (Buck) Virgil Lathrop was born October 12, 1944, in Lostine, Oregon, one of five children, in a house where ranching and hard work shaped every day.

Buck graduated from Blue Mountain Community College in 1964 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He began his 41-year career working for ODOT and he married his high school sweetheart, Vicki Jones, that same year. Together they raised two children, Jarrod and Heidi, teaching them the value of hard work, honesty and faith.

Buck and Vicki were members of the Nazarene Church of Roseburg where they made many life-long friends. When the Nazarene Church folded they moved to the Hucrest Community Church, along with most of their friends, where their Christian family grew even larger and stronger.

The family would like to recognize and thank Dave Harland for his unwavering friendship with Buck over several decades. Their bond was strong, right up to the end.

In November, 2010, Buck lost the love of his life very suddenly to a brain aneurism. His life was suddenly torn apart, but the friendships the two of them had created throughout their marriage carried him through the darkest days of his life.

In January, 2014 Buck met Doris Johnson and it was love at first sight. They married that following August and spent 11 wonderful years together, traveling throughout the United States, Australia, Mexico, and Canada as well as trips to Hawaii every winter.

Buck left this world too soon, leaving a legacy of love to his two children, Jarrod Lathrop (Teresa) of Medford, Heidi (Derek) Bradford, of Lorena, Texas, and grandchildren Bryce Lathrop, Brendon Lathrop, and Blaine Bradford. He also had a close relationship with his three step-children, Jeremy (Amy) Leonard, Erica (Robert) Miller and Wesley (Audrey) Leonard-Johnson, 15 step-grandchildren and nine step-great grandchildren.

Buck lived a life full of hard work, friendship, devotion, and above all, love for his family. And though we grieve his loss, we honor a life well lived and a man deeply cherished.

Buck was preceded in death by his first wife, Vicki, parents Quentin and Irene Lathrop and his siblings Dale Lathrop, Kenneth Lathrop and Patricia Snodderly. He is survived by his wife Doris, his two children, Jarrod and Heidi, and his three grandsons. He is also survived by his sister, Muriel Jones of Lostine, Oregon and numerous other family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025, at Roseburg Alliance Church, 2165 Garden Valley Road, Roseburg, Oregon. Reception to follow at the church.
